In The Door!

The aircraft's crowded, your mouth's dry and you're sitting on the floor with no room to move. The engine noise and prop blast coming in the open door are a bit intimidating but it's too late to worry now as you're not booked on the return flight. Suddenly, your thoughts are interrupted by a shout of 'STAND UP! HOOK UP!' from the Dispatcher. You scramble awkwardly to your feet under the combined weight of your main and reserve 'chutes and hook your static line on the steel cable above your head that runs the length of the plane.

'FIRST MAN, IN THE DOOR!', yells the Dispatcher and everybody shuffles up to keep the stick tight. Whilst you still feel apprehensive you also feel rising  excitement. Now that it's actually time, you want to get out that door. You glance round at the others, their faces tense but determined and one of your mates grins and gives you the thumbs up. You find yourself grinning back. 'GO!' The first man's gone without hesitation and you envy him as the stick moves forward, boots crashing in time on the floor. The adrenalin is really starting to kick in now and you can no longer feel  the weight of your equipment. There's just time for a final thought and you're at the door. The Dispatcher takes the static line as you turn and look into space and then you're gone. Just four more jumps and those wings are yours...
